Slip & Fall Statistics

We have would like to introduce you to the world of anti slip treaments/anti-slip treatments by highlighting below, a list of statistics from a number of countries. They show that there is a worldwide problem of very serious consequences. Statistics about anti slip treatments and the market they are present in have become available only recently in developed countries. Emerging Market nations have very little or none statistical data available but studies show that the problem is even larger there, since they fall behind well industrialized countries in terms of Health and Safety at workplaces and public areas, anti slip treatments are sometimes not even available in these countries..

United States

  • In the workplace slips and falls cause over 300.000 injuries per year (an average of one every two minutes). A figure that can be prevented by making use of anti slip treatments/anti-slip treatments.

  • According to the US Department of Labour, 15 percent of accidental workplace deaths are caused by slips, trips and falls, second only to traffic crash fatalities. A figure that can be prevented by making use of anti slip treatments/anti-slip treatments.

  • In workplaces it costs US$ 4 billion in lost productivity and compensations every year. A figure that can be prevented by making use of anti slip treatments

  • Falls in the workplace are the number one preventable loss type; in public places falls are far and away the leading cause of injury. More than one million people suffer from slip, trip or fall injuries each year, and more than 16.000 die as a result of falls, second only to automobiles as a cause of death. A figure that can be prevented by making use of anti slip treatments. Falls, due to the lack of anti slip treatments are estimated to cause at least 17 percent of occupational injuries, and more than 18 percent of public sector injuries. In addition, it is well known that slips, trips and falls are underreported, since accident rates are normally classified by injury type rather that cause of injury in workers compensation and NEISS.

  • In 2000, 1.6 million seniors were treated in emergency departments for fall-s and 353,000 were hospitalized (CDC 2001).

  • In 1999, about 10,000 people ages 65 and older died from fall-related injuries (CDC 2001). More than 60% of people who die from falls are 75 and older (Murphy 2000).

  • Of those who fall, 20% to 30% suffer moderate to severe injuries such as hip fractures or head traumas that reduce mobility and independence, and increase the risk of premature death (Sterling 2001).

  • Falls are a leading cause of traumatic brain injuries (Jager 2000).

  • Among older adults, the majority of fractures are caused by falls (Bell 2000).

  • Approximately 3% to 5% of older adult falls cause fractures (Cooper 1992; Wilkins 1999). Based on the 2000 census, this translates to 360,000 to 480,000 fall-related fractures each year.

European Union

  • Annually in the European Union, over 5.500 people die as a direct consequence of accidents at workplaces and over 75.000 become permanently disabled to work. Over 4 million suffer, as a consequence of these accidents, injuries that get them temporarily out of work, all which can be avoided by having anti slip treatments applied to their floors.

  • 20.000 million Euros and 150.000 work days are lost annually in the European Union due to accidents at workplaces. People, companies and society, all pay a high price. Depending on the country, the costs could be as high as 1% to 3% of the GDP.

  • Studies carried out in Germany for the industries of meat, fish and dairy products show that the main cause of accidents is due to:slip resistance below the European Norms, easliy solved by having anti slip treatments applied.

  • Lack of light in the work place.

  • Inappropriate footwear for the floor surface.

The same study carried out in other European countries, showed that in most of the companies in he service sector (shopping malls, supermarkets, hospitals, hotels, etc) the main cause of accidents is that slip resistance of floor surfaces is well below the European Standards. In act, for most of the companies, the aesthetic of the floor or financial factors overshadow the safety of citizens.

United Kingdom

  • Slips, trips and falls on level ground (STFL) consistently account for around 1 in 3 major injuries, and for over 1 in 5 over-3-day injuries in workplace areas throughout Great Britain, a total of at least 35,000 injuries per annum (one serious slip accident every three minutes). HSE statistics suggest that the majority of these STFL accidents are slips.

  • Pedestrian slipping and tripping is the most common cause of injuries in UK workplaces. Each year over 8,500 major injuries (which amount to 37% of the total of all occupational major injury accidents), are caused by slipping and tripping. In 95% of these accidents the injuries involve broken bones. Half of reported injuries to members of the public are slips and trips.

  • In addition slips and trips are often the initiators of accidents attributed to other causes, such as some machinery accidents, scaldings and probably over one third falls from height.

  • Occupational accidents formally classified as slips and trips cost the UK economy about 750 million pounds each year.
